Eastington Community Centre

Eastington Community Centre and Owen Harris Memorial Ground.

Firstly the OHMG Committee would like to thank all those who put in valuable volunteer time in order to produce and distribute the ECN. It’s a great read and is representative of the wonderful community spirit that we have here in Eastington. We are so pleased that the ECN team are back, well done all.

Another valuable resource that we have available to us is the Gloucestershire Rural Community Council. They provide support to all the rural communities in the County. Following the easing of lock down we have been gratefully receiving information from GRCC as to how multi use Village Halls and Community Centres should proceed, this is based on the Government guidance. If you have a lot of diverse users, as we do, it’s complex, and it’s constantly being updated, so a lot of reading!

During lockdown and in the last couple of months the Committee has been working closely with all our regular Centre users giving updates and any support that we can to enable their safe return when this is advisable.

In June, after a lot of hard work in respect of Covid 19 safety measures, our amazing Playgroup returned to the Centre, albeit on a restricted basis. Playgroup is classed as an essential user so the areas of the Centre that they were using had to be restricted for their sole use. This may change in September and is something that is under review.

Going forward, our priority is to gradually open up to our other regulars who use the main hall for evening classes. Sadly, due to all the restrictions we don’t feel that we can accommodate parties or bar events at the current time.

This has been a very challenging time for a lot but one positive is that we have been very fortunate with the good weather and as lockdown started to ease it was wonderful to see families making use of the beautiful public field space, having picnics, exercising and playing sports games.

Early after the easing a family set up a little area on the side of the field with a parasol, a couple of fold up chairs, a blanket for the kids, a picnic and ball games. This reminded me of when families would go out for that Sunday afternoon drive and stop on a verge at the side of the road to enjoy the countryside views. Fold up chairs; sandwiches and a flask of tea were the only requirements. Sometimes the simple pleasures are the best ones.

Thanks everyone for supporting your local Community Centre and we look forward to welcoming you all back as soon as it is safe to do so.
