On 22nd June, Dame Janet Trotter came to speak about her role as Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire. Entertaining, informative, passionate, she began her talk with the military origins of the role some 500 years ago. The Lord Lieutenants are now expected to serve the monarchy and to uphold the dignity of the crown. Her tasks include arranging royal visits and presenting the Queen’s awards for Enterprise and for Voluntary service – for which a relatively high number of Gloucestershire folk have been selected.
She ended with the thought that the monarchy is now undergoing great change, almost a rebirth, and that the Lord Lieutenant (or Lady Lord Lieutenant as she likes to put it) is acting as the midwife.
On the 4th July members paid a visit to Wick Court to experience the great work being done to enable ‘city’ children to experience the workings of a real farm and understand where their food comes from.
